What are the effects of Rahu in the 8th house? Are they good or bad?

Hari Om Namo Narayana!

(‘Kaala-Bhairava’ worship can be very helpful for this placement.)

You know, I have a theory.

It’s important you hear it before I move on to answering this question.

My theory is that astrologers who have an aspect prominent in their chart are great in working with that aspect when advising others or studying it.

So someone with a strong Saturn will be able to understand the Saturnian energy a lot better compared to someone who doesn’t have a strong Saturn.

Obviously, other things in the chart should support the knowledge etc. but this is one thing people don’t really think about ever. The ‘karmic’ and ‘fated’ aspect of astrological predictions and guidance.

It’s these esoteric aspects that lie beyond your discernible ‘physical’ control that often cause the ‘intellectuals’ to just dismiss astrology as mumbo jumbo. This is also the reason that many well read and formally trained astrologers can make pretty inaccurate predictions.

Why?

Because ‘Vedic’ astrology is a lot of things. It’s more than just reading memorizing and then using those ‘shlokas’ to predict someone’s life. A lot of the things that form the backbone of ‘vedic’ astrology, involve studying astronomy, having a good foundation in ‘vedic’ literature, much of which has to do primarily with knowledge about the deities and the universe. These things are important to make sense of the background stories of the ‘nakshatras’ and their ‘deities’, nature of signs, planets and aspects etc.

But beyond all of that, there is the element of ‘destiny’ that is disconcerting.

I have seen people spend their entire life searching for answers about some aspects in their chart and never really being satisfied with explanations and answers until they meet someone who tells them something that gives them the closure on life, sometimes even their existence.

What’s the reason?

The reason is that quite often the placement you are seeking answers for is such that it will very rarely be understood by you or anyone else unless they have some aspect of that placement very strong in their chart.

In my case for example, I write so much about the nodes, ‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’ because I have very prominent nodal placement in my chart and all through the divisional charts as well.

It’s because I have gone through so many inexplicable life experiences that people wouldn’t normally believe or understand that when I look at nodal placements, the first thing is I feel compassion for the native.

That’s because the nodal placements are deeply ‘karmic’. You have to learn how to deal with the consequences of those ‘karmic’ events. That’s your biggest lesson with the nodes.

With other planets, your lesson is to learn to develop those traits.

For example, the lesson with Saturn is to learn that life is not ‘shorter than you think’ as most people like to believe.

The lesson that Saturn gives you is that life is much longer than you imagine.. and you have to live your entire life with the consequences of your actions and all the emotions that come with it.

Similarly, to take another example, the lesson with Sun is that you need to learn to make sacrifices to achieve your soul’s highest purpose in this material plane. You can realize your greatest potential and transcend the material plane however it will demand that you make sacrifices and learn which ones to make and when.

This is why ‘saadhnas’ and meditation, all of the spiritual work that needs to be done to be a healer, a guide, a reader, are so important.

Why?

Because otherwise you would have to take many lifetimes to understood so many placements. To understand the actual impact of a placement deep enough, you need to be able to look beyond what meets the eye.

Simply memorizing ‘shlokas’ like a parrot and then parroting them out to someone who has come to you, seeking possibly life altering critical advice, won’t work. You need to be able to connect deeply with what you see in the chart in front of you. Otherwise you will miss things.

One such placement is the North node ‘Rahu’ in the 8th house.

  1. See most people with the North node in the 8th are so troubled by this placement is because they are addicted to ‘wanting to know’.
  2. With ‘Rahu’ placed in the 8th you can be certain that ‘knowing’ is not something that is going to come easy to you in this lifetime.
  3. Why?
    1. Because since the North node is placed here, it shows that in previous lifetimes you did not focus much on research, discovery, intuition, occult, secrets etc.
    2. Your main focus revolved around the matters of the 2nd house mainly; which is where the South node ‘Ketu’ is placed for you.
    3. In previous lifetimes, your soul focused more on security, self sufficiency, physical assets, physical, actual, ‘tangible’ worldly things.
    4. In this lifetime however, the natives find themselves enamored by all things abstract, secretive, foreign, deep, intense and unpredictable.
  4. This is the placement of a person who is scared of horror movies on the one hand but on the other, they will very easily go kayaking solo, on a deep lake they know nothing about, based on a ‘hunch’.
  5. Acting on ‘hunches’ is one of the primary traits of these individuals and quite often, when their ‘hunches’ land and their intuition is spot on, the end result is spectacular.
    1. When their hunches don’t land and their intuition turns out to be inaccurate, they can completely freak out and that’s where the fearsome impact of ‘Rahu’ sets in.
  • All in all, in the 8th the North node is not a bad placement at all. However it can create major problems if you don’t take the necessary precautions in your decision making. We shall cover them a little later.
  • First, look at the examples of the following people. They all have the North node in their 8th house and interestingly, they have all shined through their partnerships and transformational experiences.

1. Albert Einstein

  • Albert Einstein’s first wife Mileva Maric is said to have had a huge role to play in his research. Although she failed to get a degree herself, it is important to note that she was better than Einstein at experimental work in applied physics and Einstein better at theoretical work.
  • If you go deeper into Einstein’s relationship with Mileva, it will open up a can of worms. However, it is just safe to say that the influence of the North node in the 8th house did indeed have the impact of making Einstein thrive through relationships.

2. George Foreman

  1. A lot of you probably may not have heard of him unless you are boxing aficionados but George Foreman’s story is one of the most inspiring stories in the sporting world.
  2. George Foreman was a contemporary of the great boxer Muhammad Ali and the Joe Fraizer.
  3. Although a boxer with a very strong frame and technique, Foreman could never have his day in the Sun as long as Ali was around because Ali was the greatest of all time. There was simply no beating him in his prime. He kept Foreman from getting the heavyweight title as long as he reigned.
  4. Then Foreman began to age as Ali left the scene and the next generation of boxers began to emerge. His biggest heartbreak was when he lost to Jimmy Young in 1977.
    1. Foreman retired from boxing at the age of 28!
    2. He then spent his time working with the church. He transformed massively post his retirement. He became an ordained minister, and a street preacher!
  5. 10 years later, Foreman decided to return to the ring because he was certain that boxing was his highest calling. Foreman returned to boxing at the age of 38!
    1. When he was 45, he got a shot at the heavyweight title, fighting a very young, athletic reigning boxing champ, Micahel Moorer (26).
    2. Foreman stunned the world and won the heavyweight title!
    3. At 45!
    4. He is the oldest to ever have won the boxing heavyweight title of the world.

3. Winston Churchill

  • He is widely considered the ‘greatest Briton ever’ and a shrewd statesman, who was the leader that was needed for Britain at a time it was involved in World War 2.
  • Churchill may not be perceived that way by people from British colonies, especially such as India, towards whom his policies were extremely insensitive.
  • However, Churchill was a master in diplomacy, strategy and relationships.
  • He was the kind of person who had dirt on everyone he needed to use as a pawn to win the game against Nazi Germany. This is one of the biggest traits that made him a very difficult force to beat for the Axis powers during World War 2.

Now, coming back to the North node in the 8th house.

  1. See one of the biggest things about this placement is that things go pretty wrong at times.
  2. For one, it’s the 8th house and the North node there necessarily means that the soul is here to learn all these lessons that accompany tough challenges and unpredictable circumstances.
  3. Second, the 8th house is also the house of your personal power.
  • Why is that?
  • This is because the 8th house signifies death and rebirth. So every transformation and change that comes about in your life, if you really look at it, it’s your own doing. Right?
  • Therefore , the 8th house is your personal power. It’s your ability to face challenges as well.

Now a combination of these factors can quite often throw up situations that may seem drastic and disastrous.

The end result is almost the same: That the native shall have to accept change or transform themselves willingly to deal with the direction that life is taking them in. They are here to develop their personal power in this lifetime.

This is primarily because the native is so used to the themes of ‘security’ and ‘predictability’ denoted by the South node placement in the 2nd house that this life poses many realistic challenges which can only be tackled by stepping out of the comfort zone and ending things.. leaving them behind.

The lesson is that you can recreate all that you lost but in a different way. Your new success won’t be how your old success was. It will require you to change and it will be different from what you imagine.

Now, this problem can be exacerbated if you have a bunch of planets conjunct the South node.

Conjunctions to the North node can still be quite productive (although they come with their own set of problems).

However, specifically in this case, they pose a major problem because the biggest challenge for the native’s soul in this lifetime is learning to embrace uncertainty and let go off security and predictability.

Those strengths will always remain the native’s forte, to be better utilized after the South node matures post 48. However, before that, especially until 42, when the North node matures, the native needs to learn to take help, partner with others, hone their ability to face and surpass challenges.

The North node in the 8th house truly seeks to bring about a ‘transformative’ change in the native.

This is why the themes of sex, occult, clandestine love affairs, can be so prominent in some native’s lives. This is because the native is naturally drawn to these things as a way of self exploration.

So instead of ‘branding’ and ‘stereotyping’ this placement, you need to understand primarily what it is seeking to do.

What it is seeking to do is, it is seeking to push the native to forage deeper into their personal power and in this aspect, ‘kundalini kriya’ and ‘yoga’, ‘tantra’ can have a huge constructive, enlightening and transformative impact on the native’s life.

There are some negative interpretations of this placement but they mainly have to do with an over expression of 8th house and Scorpion like qualities.

This is because the 8th house corresponds naturally to the sign of Scorpio and with the North node there, it means that the native is going to take on more and more Scorpio like qualities in this lifetime.

  • The positive side of these qualities is silence, observation, intuition, sexual vitality and knowledge, occult knowledge, knowledge of managing other people’s money, keeping secrets, researching, forming deep connections, connection with ‘kundalini’ energy etc.
  • The negative side of these qualities correspond to the shadow aspect of the North node’s energy in the 8th house. These are: possessiveness, paranoia, confusion of self identity, addiction to substances, alcohol or sex; hiding your life and true personality, concealing and covering important facts, obsessiveness, revengeful behavior etc.

Hope this answers your question.
