In Vastu shastra, what is the West responsible for?

Hari Om!

(In the White House, the West Wing is where the POTUS has is Oval Office along with the Cabinet room, Executive Room, Press Briefing Room, and the offices of his Executive Staff. Isn’t it amazing how even without trying, some designs are so consistent with their traditional energies?)

The West direction is ruled by Saturn and represents relationships of the inmates of a house with the outer world.

Not many people consider the importance of the West direction that much in terms of ‘Vaastu’ but actually you would be surprised to know that in ‘Vedic’ astrology, natives of Saturn ‘nakshatras’ can actually do quite well in a West facing house.

See first of all no direction is bad and if there any rules on which directions not to build the entrance in, that’s because the energy of that direction is not suited to what the energy of an entrance should be like.

  • In the case of West, the western portion of your house and its state can be reflective of the nature of your business, relationships, any sort of negotiations, litigations or contracts.
  • The West is ideally a direction that should be uncluttered and firmly secured.
  • A decay, seepage or termite/ infestation etc. on the Western wall can result in litigations and unwanted problems with business partners.
  • Plumbing issues in the Western part of your house can have an impact on joint assets of the primary couple residing in the house.
  • The West should ideally be robust and minimalistic.
  • If you have an entrance here, installing an iron door would be helpful.

Any heavy objects or furniture you wish to keep here should be placed towards the SW side and the NW kept as empty as possible as this is the ‘pavana kona’.

This can be a great direction for you to build storages of essential items that you may need; ideally not heavy storages for machinery and raw materials though.

You want to keep this place aesthetically pleasing and light hearted.

It’s a great place to meet guests, to entertain and to work.

If you have a home office, this is a good direction for it.

Newspapers, bills, magazines, a sofa set, work table and things like that.

essential items used around the home like tools, paints, tapes, wires etc.

Not permanent storage though.

If you want to store things permanently, see if you can create a space for that a little towards the Southern side of the West section.

  • The Western wall should ideally be stronger than the Northern and the Eastern walls of the home.
  • Obviously you are not going to put an extra layer of bricks to strengthen it if you have bought a flat.
  • However, you can do some additional stone work done here if you want.
  • Any artwork or craft work such as paintings or sculptures, handicrafts etc. that you want to display, you can do so here.
  • It will have a good overall impact on the home.
  • Balconies and Windows can also be great in this direction.
  • Avoid having a glass wall in this direction.
  • You can have large windows but avoid complete glass walls.

Hope this helps.
