When exactly do Rahu and Ketu give their results? How do you know through Vedic astrology?

Hari Om Namo Narayana!

(In a surprising turn of events, Rishi Sunak became the PM of the UK at 42, the age of ‘Rahu’ maturation.)

I have written a lot of answers and articles on this topic of the North and South node of the Moon, (‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’) and you would be encouraged to check them out to understand in more detail at a basic level.

Now, the thing is that with the nodes, they are always working behind the scenes. Which means that they are always giving you some result or another even if you aren’t conscious of it.

This is true for every planetary placement in your chart in fact, but as I will show you in the following paragraphs, it is especially true for the nodes.

In fact, quite a few times when a client comes to me talking about problems they’ve been having as a result of their Saturn ‘sade saati’ period or another such difficult planetary time period in general, when I tell them it’s actually one of the nodes causing them problems, they get startled.

“But why? one of my clients asked me a few days ago when I told them their current financial difficulties was as a result of their North node placement. I am not even in ‘Rahu’ period!”

“Yes, but that doesn’t mean that they are just sitting there in your chart doing nothing. They have their own cycles of development going on.”

See, here is something for you to understand about the chart in general:

  1. Planetary time periods are just periods of the maximum impact of a particular planet.
  2. Planetary transits are just as critical and their impact is also visibly felt.
    1. In fact, if a transit is blocking an event, even if the planetary time period is promising it, it just won’t manifest.
  3. If a particular planet is sitting in the ‘central’ houses of your chart i.e. the 1,4,7,10 houses, then it becomes especially important and you can think of it as always working behind the scenes in your life.
  4. If a planet is forming an important ‘yoga’ in your chart, good or bad but especially good (I have seen in my observation), once again it’s impact will be visibly felt.
  5. If a planet controls important ‘nakshatra’ placements in your chart such as the ascendant, Moon, ascendant lord or two or more planets, and/or the planet whose period you are undergoing right now, once again that planet is very prominent wrt its impact on your life.
  6. Now, last but not the least.. in fact, probably one of the most important points a lot of people miss out, is that a planet’s impact becomes most prominent in the period of its maturation.

The strength at maturation is especially important for planets and this is where I have seen many good astrologers falter.

You may not see anything in the MD, the sub period, the ascendant or transit but if it is the period of maturation of a particular planet is your chart, it is carrying immense power over your destiny at that time.

What are planetary maturation periods?

These are periods when a particular planet in the chart becomes stronger wrt its position in your chart and its impact vis a vis its placement becomes more prominent.

I’ve written about this a lot but encapsulating planetary maturations once again below:

  1. Jupiter: First to mature at the age of 15.
  2. Sun: Matures at the age of 18.
  3. Venus: Matures at the age of 23.
  4. Moon: Matures at the age of 24.
  5. Mars: Matures at the age of 28.
  6. Mercury: Matures at the age of 31.
  7. Saturn: Matures at the age of 35.
  8. North Node: Matures at the age of 42.
  9. South Node: Matures at the age of 48.

If you go back and review your life, you will find out that key events have taken place wrt your life path in any or all of these ages.

The later the planetary maturation, the more its impact.

What does that mean?

  • It means that let’s say we are talking about the South Node; its maturation arrives at the very end and therefore you may feel the impact of South node maturation from the age of 46 itself and probably will still be dealing with it even when you’re 50.
  • For Jupiter, the impact may arrive giver or take 6 months. For Sun, 6–10 months and so on.
  • These aren’t hard and fast rules but they depend on the individual strengths of planets in a chart and I’m just sharing here for the purpose of your knowledge that it may arrive bang on your birthday or the effects may be delayed or prolonged on either side of that age depending on the stage of your life.

Now, here’s that important thing:

A planet conjunct either of the nodes will not mature until the nodes mature.

What does this mean?

  • It means that if you have Moon conjunct your North node, it will take you the better part of your life to develop that Moon until you can adequately begin to harness and channel the power of that planet.
  • This is why maturation periods of the nodes can have a massive impact on a person’s life.

Why?

  • Well, imagine that the North node is conjunct Venus and Sun in your chart.
  • So this means Venus and Sun both had to forego their maturation periods early in your life when they should have been able to mature and give proper results based on their placement and significance in your chart.
  • Along comes North node maturation at 42 and not only is the North node delivering massive doses of his maturation in your life, suddenly long delayed progress and events that should have happened at the ages of 18 and 23 get triggered too!

Do you understand?

This is why the nodes can trigger massive changes in your life without you even being in their planetary time periods!

It doesn’t end there and in fact, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

  • One very important thing you need to know about the nodes is their significance.
    • The North node signifies forward ‘Karma’.
      • It points to the direction the soul is here to take in this lifetime in order to grow, evolve and come closer to its goal of liberation and oneness with the divine.
    • The South node signifies past ‘Karma’.
      • It points to the areas of mastery of the soul from previous lifetimes. It shows us experiences and patterns of growth being carried over by the soul from previous lifetimes that it needs to now let go of.

When you look at these two important significations of the nodes, you can see that they essentially form the compass of our soul.

  • They guide and direct the soul’s journey in this lifetime and every time you are falling into old patterns that you need to let go of, you are triggering the South node.
  • Every time you are trying to move towards what you desire in this lifetime, you are triggering the North node.
  • So even if you are not running their time periods or even their maturation periods or key transits, you are constantly triggering your nodes and unless you learn to channel and harness their energy, they will keep creating havoc in your life.

Like the example included at the beginning of the answer, I would like include a few more examples, some good, some bad that briefly illustrate to you how the nodes can give results and in vastly different ways:

King Charles:

I’ve mentioned before as well, after being first in line to the throne for a long time, he was coronated King recently in the period of his North node return in the 10th house.

Amitabh Bachchan

  • After being the ‘Angry young man’ of Bollywood for many years and then being identified as the king of small screen with KBC, AB roared back as an actor with disruptive movies that reinvented his image and perception as an actor.
  • He has the South node in the first house.
  • In 2007, he did disruptive, controversial and path breaking movies that redefined Bollywood in many ways. They were all critically acclaimed.
  • Guess what?
  • This was when the major period of his South node began in 2007. His filmography between 2007 – 2014 was completely different from the kind of movies he had done in the past. He even guest starred in the DiCaprio starrer, “The Great Gatsby” in this period.

Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw

  • India won the 1971 war under his leadership.
  • He had the South Node in his ascendant.
  • Guess what?
  • That was right when his South node major period began.
  • Interestingly, in the same period, he was undergoing a nodal return i.e. the South node was transiting over his natal South node.
  • His South node major period began some time in November 1971 and by that time the inner conflict in East Pakistan was raging with India working with their militia to help overthrow the oppressive regime.
  • Pakistan troops surrendered on 16th December 1971.

Elvis Presley

  • The ‘King of Rock and Roll’ died of a heart attack at the age of 42.
  • Although predicting death is not really something I’m into. However, it’s not a coincidence that his North node was conjunct Venus which was placed in the ‘naidhana taara’ for him.
  • That is a very inauspicious star and can often signify death.
  • Now, this Venus matured and activated fully only with the maturation of the North node at 42.

There are many other famous people who have died eerily close to the ages of 42 and 48 and had the nodes in important placements. You can google the same for extra research. I don’t quite like to dwell on the topic of death and astrology together in the same breath as it gives a very fatalistic overtone to this branch of study and that shouldn’t be the case.

  • To sum it up, understanding when the nodes deliver their results is multidimensional.
  • ‘Results’ are a very subjective thing.
  • You have to evaluate them with respect to the context.

Hope this helps.
