Hari Om Namo Narayana!
If you’ve been following this series of ‘Ketu‘ through the houses, then the previous two posts in this series would have given you a pretty good idea about the energy of ‘Ketu maharaj‘, what he represents and what he stands for.
‘Ketu‘ is the blueprint of your soul’s past experiences.
It is the code of all past experiences from the many lifetimes that your soul has previously manifested in the material plane and all the things learnt from those experiences.
‘Ketu‘ placement in your chart points out towards the area of your life where you are a natural expert. This is also the area where you usually have the most comfort and the desire to break free from.
Check out the previous post in this series if you haven’t already and especially the first one where I’ve built a very strong foundation about the nature of ‘Ketu‘.
Now, moving on. What happens when the South Node of the moon, ‘Ketu‘ is in the 3rd house of the birth chart?
- The 3rd house is known as the ‘Sahaja bhava‘.
- ‘Sahaja‘ meaning ‘ease’.
- This is one of the 3 ‘Upachya‘ houses.
- ‘Upachya‘ meaning it ‘grows better with time’.
The third house is the house of your skills, communication, siblings, peers, dexterity, courage, relatives and also neighbors. The 3rd house basically represents all the people you interact with on a regular basis.
It is also 8th from the 8th so it can represent sudden events, in-laws, legacy, death and rebirth, conjugal gains and ‘personal power’.
The meaning of the 3rd house actually is very deep. It is quite often a very prominent house when we analyze the charts of entrepreneurs, sportspersons, stock brokers, businessmen and artists.
Some notable examples in this regard:

Steve Jobs had his Saturn in the third house.

has Mercury and Mars in his third house.
- So, the third house is the natural house of Gemini and there is a lot of Mercurial energy in this house.
- This house is about commerce, writing, reading, discussing, talking.
- It represents phone calls, small group discussions. Why small group discussions? Because large groups are represented by the 11th house and 9th house represents addressing a larger group of people, the masses.
- The 3rd house also represents small conversations i.e. short conversations you have with your colleagues at the water cooler, with a stranger on the bus, the store clerk, the watchman etc.
- The 3rd house is the most important house when we talk about courage and determination.
- The 3rd house is the most critical house when we look to analyze someone’s ability to ‘earn their own bread’. Why is that?
- Of course, in order to be able to provide for yourself, as a self employed person or an Entrepreneur, a broker or athlete performer of any kind, you need to constantly ‘make things happen’.
- ‘Making things happen’ requires a lot of courage. Doesn’t it?
- Calling someone for a sale, going up to talk to someone you don’t know.
- Making new friends in a team setting, interacting and establishing rapport with people you have no connection with besides your work or profession.
- All of it requires a lot of courage and ‘self efforts’.
- Things just don’t happen unless you go and ‘make them’ happen.
When you put the South Node of the Moon, ‘Ketu‘ in the third position, suddenly things get confusing.
Why confusing?
Well because the native has all of this natural courage, natural ability and aptitude towards ‘earning their own bread’, towards ‘making things happen’ for themselves and towards communicating, interacting and expressing themselves..
However, there is simply no desire to grow in that direction!
It’s pretty simple.
- The soul has experienced those things in past lifetimes and although these may be things that come naturally to the individual, the individual simply isn’t inclined to make use of these traits in this lifetime.
- That’s because the individual’s urge, or rather the soul’s urge, is to grow in the direction of ‘Rahu‘, who is situated in the 9th house.
- These individuals therefore, tend to focus more on ‘ideas’ than small talk.
- The native can be perceived as a bad ‘communicator’ and ‘slow learner’. Since the 3rd house is the house of learning and interacting, with ‘Ketu‘ placed in the 3rd house, the native has a hard time grasping things the first time around.
- This is because the consciousness is always aligned more towards ‘higher knowledge’, ‘deeper wisdom’ and ‘addressing a large number of people’ rather than a small group.
- However, they can do very well when asked to research a topic in depth as this is where the application of ‘Rahu‘ energy in the 9th house becomes active.
- Now, with ‘Ketu‘ in the 3rd house blocking their natural ‘Gemini’ traits, this individual is probably a person who will go and post a photo on their Instagram as soon as their cup of coffee arrives, but take days to respond to simple messages from their best friends.
- And as ‘Rahu‘ is in the 9th house, the individual can be painfully direct when making small talk and go on and on when talking about their own ideas and sharing their quite often elaborate insights about topics.
This placement is also one which in ‘Vedic‘ astrology is called ‘pitri dosha‘ as the north node ‘Rahu‘ is placed in the 9th house. However, we will go into more detail about that aspect when we discuss ‘Rahu’ through the houses.
On the ‘Ketu‘ side of things, the important thing to be noted is that this individual struggles quite a bit in the following areas as life progresses:
- Forming friendships
- Exerting their will
- Expressing themselves
- Learning new things
- Short travels
- Working in a team setting
I say ‘as life progresses’ because that is the nature of ‘Ketu maharaj‘. He is supposed to push you towards the opposite end of the axis towards ‘Rahu‘. He does so by simply taking away the native’s friends, team members, neighbors and sometimes even the right words, when time comes to communicate.
The native’s lesson is to not engage in the trivial and occupy the mind with higher wisdom and higher knowledge. To focus on bigger things, deliberate on deeper topics and give their attention to ‘larger ideas’ presented to a larger audience.
The native however, may be a very good editor as the ability to just ‘cut’ through tons of content and come ‘to the point’ is expressed very well with ‘Ketu’ exuding his influence and expertise in the third bhava.
The lesson for people with this placement is simply to understand that:
- The support they seek is not going to come from their ‘peers’ but followers.
- The courage these seek is not going to be expressed in working for themselves but instead, applying their mind to bigger ideas for the collective benefit.
- Their ‘karma‘ is to wade through tons of incoherent chatter and zero in on the crux of the messaging that is the most important and relaying that information, syndicating it to as many people as possible.
- The individual could do very well in institutional education especially ‘creating’ and teaching at the graduate level.
- The individual can also be filmmaker, politician, travel blogger, researcher and publicist.
